series began by painting patterns made by darts thrown in a wall and expanded over the field of the picture plane. darts were abandoned, beginning paintings with spontaneous, de-skilled marks trying to conjure unexpected juxtapositions of line and shape. had interest in asian calligraphy and writing and how symbols/ figures were formed. also had an interest in the drawings of h. bosch, and his combination of figural elements to generate forms
